“vos sos como yo pero en otro”. una exhibición colectiva de retratos. | por guillermina baiguera, lucio romano, gaston caba, veronica gomez, nadia lawson, bruno gruppalli, virginia negri, alejandra gomez, lucas mercado, florencia caterina, andrea vazquez, nicolas ozuna, romina iglesias, juan hernandez, sebastian bruno, sofia berakha. | curador, david nahon. | Hace mucho tiempo pensaba que el modelo ideal era el modelo muerto, y que el unico retrato posible seria aquel que se realizara sobre un cuerpo sin vida. Recordaba las primeras fotografias aplicadas a cadaveres que permitian tiempos prolongados de exposicion. Luego pense en la tanatopraxia: si maquillar a una persona muerta era una forma de hacer un retrato -despues de todo siempre se parte de algun lado. Para ese entonces conoci a Demagistris, un peluquero que realiza retratos con el cabello que corta a sus clientes. Me di cuenta que siempre se esta hablando de uno mismo, aun cuando se ensaya retratar a otro. Entonces entiendo que un retrato no es un retrato, es apenas la representacion de un rostro, como el paisaje de alguien. Un retrato es otra cosa. O lo que un retrato intenta capturar pasa por otro lado. Finalmente, cualquier pieza de arte es autoreferencial y, en ese movimiento -a veces por accidente de una generalidad- se refiere al otro y sin querer se lo retrata.Quizás un retrato sea una naturaleza muerta con persona. | en chez vautier: calle uspallata 2181 piso 1 departamento A | inauguración sabado 10 de abril, 18 hs. cierra el sábado 17. www.chezvautier.com

Piñatarama | Group Show - Mexico

The piñata’s associated with the Latino culture, but historians point to Asia (especially China) as its actual point of origin. It’s supposed that the famous traveler Marco Polo’s visit to that nation, he saw how the Chinese created colorful animal figures covered with paper, which is hung with ornaments, and were used in the New Year celebrations. As a good observer, Polo brought Europe the idea of these early piñatas. Although housed in various regions of their religious significance, today, is considered a symbol of fun and entertainment.

Between contemporary design of characters and this popular tradition the project aims to let ourselves be surprised by the unexpected results arising from the interpretation of these characters by Mexican artisans who made them. And give the viewer a particular facility where the 30 piñatas “design” reflect the contemporary look of mixtures, juxtaposition and appropriation, in this case an object culturally ingrained in Latin America. Mexican artisans Ricardo Linares and Lorenzo García will be constructing the piñatas based on the designs of 25 worldwide artists including Cupco, Cecy Meade, Apak, S.britt, Snaggs, Tado, David Gamez, Gaston Caba, Sonni, and many more!

Gastón Caba (Central hidroeléctrica “El Chocón”, 1978) es un artista que llego a Buenos Aires desde la luminosa Patagonia en el año 1996 y se afinco en el último rincón del barrio Palermo Utópico, donde vive y trabaja con su pequeña hija Lara.
Gastón Caba ha trabajado en múltiples puntos del planeta, con especial atención por parte del público asiático que adoptó sus creaciones como propias. En el primero de sus varios viajes a China, su maestro Chung lo introdujo al universo de la tinta china y la meditación trascendental.
En ésta, su primera muestra individual en Buenos Aires, Gastón nos muestra el camino que deja atrás. Un recorrido desde la figuración a la evaporación. El dibujo en la obra actual de Gastón Caba es el hilo conductor que expresa un recorrido hacia el vaciamiento existencial. Su obra transita desde la representación, como sus ilustraciones o comics, a la abstracción concreta de líneas rítmicas sobre el plano. El artista logra eclipsar esta compleja transición, consiguiendo que el espectador recorra este suceso naturalmente casi sin darse cuenta

What can I say about Pictopia, the 3rd Pictoplasma Conference at the Haus Der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin? It was so amazing. I want to say a big THANK YOU to the loads of people that gave me their overwhelming feedback after my speaking. Also thanks to the great artists I´ve met and that inspired me so much. I´ll upload my whole presentation if I have the chance to get the video. In the meantime, you can download the 122 images that I showed on the screen that day (use them for review purposes only, please). Also you can check the video of the song I did to close my speaking.

Iris Portraits

YCN visited the marketing company, Iris, to take polaroids of their staff to be drawn. David Sparshott, Kate Hazell and I have been drawing people. We were also provided with a list of one ting that each individual likes, some of which were a bit odd, ie Aaron Mcg likes fighting (!?).

adidas Original Denim by Diesel - Shanghai

I´ve been invited by Adidas+Diesel to create some artwork for the launch party of the new collection of adidas Original Denim by Diesel in Shanghai on Friday 21th March of 2008.
My contribution includes two mascot designs, two pictures of me wearing the jeans (pics taken by Gabriel Rud) for the catalogue, and a dedicated custom jean for exhibition (stolen during the party!!). The mascots are looking really great, they are made of soft plush, we´re all so happy with them. I had a superfun time at the party, I´d met lovely people like Delaware, Bob Foundation & Liu Zhi Zhi. Thanks to Dana for some of this lovely pictures.
